Urinary tract infections in pets | Ammonium Chloride | Acidurin |
Uses
Acidurin (Ammonium Chloride) is a type of urinary acidifier which is prescribed by veterinarians for use in cats and dogs. Treatment with this medicine helps to dissolve any magnesium ammonium phosphate crystals that may be present in the animal`s urine, which in turn leads to an improvement in bladder flow. This makes it effective at providing relief from pain in animals affected by urinary tract infections and for treating the acidification of urine.
Dosage and Administration
Pet owners must take their animal to see a vet before treating it with Acidurin (Ammonium Chloride) tablets. After a thorough examination, the vet will diagnose the animal`s condition, and prescribe the appropriate medicine, as well as the dosage required. Owners of animals have sometimes been told by vets to give their pet 1 tablet per 5kg (11lbs) of body weight, twice per day. Never administer more than the prescribed amount.
Side effects
It is possible that some animals treated with Acidurin (Ammonium Chloride) may exhibit signs of side effects during treatment. In rare cases, serious reactions may be possible. Monitor your animal closely during treatment, and take it to a vet straight away if it becomes sick.
Precautions
If this medicine is prescribed for use alongside sulphonamide therapy, there is a possibility of crystalluria. The vet will take this into consideration when prescribing the medicine. Also, it should not be used in animals that are pregnant, as it may cause fetal acidosis.
These tablets are only for use in animals, and under no circumstance should humans take them.
Seek immediate emergency veterinary attention if your animal suffers an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
Always use Acidurin (Ammonium Chloride) on your animal as you have been prescribed by the vet. Never change your animal`s dosage without first consulting a vet. The correct dosage can vary depending on your animal`s health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
This medication may not be safe for all animals. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to the vet:

- If it suffers from any allergies.
