What is Amaryl?
Amaryl when used with a proper diet and exercise program is used to treat patients with type 2 diabetes. The active ingredient glimepiride is considered a sulfonylurea type of medication. It can be used to control high blood sugar and help the body to use insulin efficiently to prevent blindness, kidney damage, loss of limbs, nerve problems and sexual function problems. Controlling diabetes can also decrease the risk of strokes and heart attacks.
How is Amaryl used?
Amaryl should be taken as directed by a doctor, usually once daily. The tablets should be taken orally with breakfast or the first meal of the day along with a full glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the condition of the patient and their response to the medication. The doctor may prescribe a low initial dose, gradually increasing the dosage to decrease the risk of side effects.
Adverse effects
Amaryl may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Stomach pain
- Dizziness
- Headaches
- Nausea
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Trouble breathing
- Dark urine
- Unusual bleeding or bruising
- Hallucinations
- Confusion
- Seizures
- Signs of infection
- Jaundice
Warnings
The medication should only be used in patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and should not be used by patients with type 1 diabetes.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Amaryl is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
