What is Anabrez?
Anabrez containing the active ingredient anastrozole is considered a nonsteroidal aromatase inhibitor type of medication. It is a type of medication used alone or along with other types of treatments such as surgery or radiation in the treatment of breast cancer in postmenopausal women. The medication works by decreasing the amount of estrogen the body produces to slow the growth and help shrink certain types of breast tumors.
How is Anabrez used?
Anabrez is usually taken orally once per day or as directed by a doctor. The medication can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a full glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient's condition and their response to the therapy. Do not discontinue the treatment without consulting a doctor as some patients may require taking the tablets for up to 5 years.
Adverse effects
Patients using Anabrez may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Upset stomach
- Loss of appetite
- Hot flushes
- Headaches
- Vaginal bleeding
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Signs of infection
- Pain in the upper right part of the stomach
- Vision problems
- Difficult or painful urination
- Skin lesions, ulcers or blisters
- Decreased bone density
- Bone pain or fractures
- Mental or mood changes
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Anabrez is not always suitable for all patients.
