What is Baytril?
Baytril can be used on dogs and cats to treat bacterial infections such as alimentary, respiratory and urogenital tracts infections, skin infections, secondary wound infections and otitis media. The active ingredient enrofloxacin works by interfering with bacterial DNA metabolism to kill bacteria. It is considered a broad spectrum antimicrobial substance belonging to the fluoroquinolone group of antibiotics.
How is Baytril used?
Baytril can be given directly or wrapped up in meat or sausages to be fed to the pet 1 to 2 times per day or as directed by a veterinarian. The pet should consume plenty of water when using the medication while avoiding all dairy products as it may alter the amount of the drug in the bloodstream. Contact a veterinarian for the correct length of treatment and dosage as it will depend on the pet's weight, condition and their response to the medication.
Adverse effects
Baytril may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Elevated liver enzymes
- Ataxia
- Vomiting
- Depression
- Diarrhea
- Lethargy
- Anorexia
- Seizures
Contact a veterinarian immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
Do not give to pregnant pets and pets below 1 year of age as the medication has detrimental effects on growing joints and bones.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Baytril is not always suitable for all patients.
