What is Clonil?
Clonil is a tricyclic antidepressant that restores certain natural substance levels to help restore balance in the brain. It can help decrease the urge to prevent repeated tasks and persistent or unwanted thoughts. It is mainly used to treat obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Some patients may also use it to treat major depression, panic disorder and chronic pain.
How is Clonil used?
Clonil is usually taken orally 1 time per day at bedtime although it may be taken in smaller doses 2 or 3 times per day. It can be taken without food but to avoid nausea or upset stomach, it is recommended to take it with food along with a glass of water. Dosage depends on the patient's condition and their reaction to the medication, contact a doctor for the correct dosage. It is not recommended to take more than 200mg of the medication within a 24 hour period. It may take a few weeks to feel the effectiveness of the medication. Do not discontinue the treatment without consulting a doctor as abruptly stopping the drug may cause symptoms to return or severe withdrawal symptoms.
Adverse effects
Patient's using Clonil may encounter side effects such as:
- Dizziness
- Drowsiness
- Dry mouth
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea or constipation
- Headache
- Blurred vision
- Insomnia
- Decreased sex drive or ability
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Hallucinations
- Muscle stiffness
- Jaundice
- Tremors
- Irregular heartbeat
- Signs of infections
Warnings
Patients should not use the medication in combination with other monoamine oxidase inhibitor antidepressants (MAOI) as they may cause severe side effects.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Clonil is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed.
