What is Enacard?
Enacard (enalapril maleate) is in a class of drugs called angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. It is indicated in dogs with mild, moderate, or severe heart failure. Enalapril Maleate is often given along with diuretics such as furosemide and digoxin.
How is Enacard used?
Enacard is usually prescribed at a starting dosage of 0.5 mg/kg daily. If the dog does not show clinical improvement within two weeks at the This may be increased to 1.0mg/kg if the vet does not notice a significant improvement within two weeks of treatment.
Often, the dog will also require a diuretic during treatment, so may also be prescribed furosemide and/or digoxin.
Warnings
The safety of Enalapril in pregnant dogs has not been established. Your vet will advise you if the benefits of treatment outweigh the risks.
Enacard is only intended to by taken by dogs. It is not for human consumption.
When a diuretic is being used as part of therapy, the dog risks developing renal problems.
