Marvelon (Ethinylestradiol/Desogestrel), is more commonly known as "the pill" which is an oral contraceptive for women. The two activity ingredients in this birth control pill are Ethinylestradiol and Desogestrel. They are versions of natural female sex hormones called oestrogen and progesterone.

The use of Marvelon (Ethinylestradiol/Desogestrel) allows the normal menstrual cycle of a woman to be modified so that there is the right level of hormones through the monthly cycle. The body gets tricked into thinking that the process of ovulation has occurred, and that is why the egg won’t be released from the ovaries. That is a necessary part of how a woman is able to become pregnant.

The other way that pregnancy is prevented has to do with the amount of mucus that is in the vaginal area increases. It offers a barrier that makes it very hard for the sperm to successfully reach the egg which is also a necessary element for conception to occur. In order for Marvelon to be effective, it must be taken every day. For the best results, it should also be taken at the same time every day. The pill is taken daily for 21 days and then there are sugar pills that are taken for the next 7 days in the cycle. If you forget to take it you should take it as soon as you remember. If you miss more than two pills in a row then you need to use an additional method of protection against pregnancy.

There are some side effects that could occur including headaches, nausea, and bloating. However, most women are able to successfully take Marvelon (Ethinylestradiol/Desogestrel) without any problems. If you take other forms of medicine make sure you tell your doctor. Some of them have been known to reduce the effectiveness of the pill.
