Rifaximin
Why is Rifaximin Used?
Rifaximin is a type of specialized antibiotic that is used to treat bacterial infections in the intestines. It isn't absorbed into the bloodstream like other types of antibiotics which is why it is good for the intestines. It is often prescribed for those who have been affected by some type of food poisoning called E. Coli. It is safe to give to children at least 12 years of age.
Rifaximin Dosage and Usage Instructions
The sooner a patient can get Rifaximin the better because E. Coli can cause damage to the kidneys and the liver. It can also result in dehydration due to vomiting and diarrhea. This medication can work quickly to calm such problems. The dose of it depends on the age and weight of the patient. It also depends on the severity of the food poisoning.
It is recommended to take the entire prescription of Rifaximin. Many people do feel much better within a few days. However, the entire bacterial infection may not be entirely destroyed in that period of time. To ensure it is completely gone continue to take all of the medication.
Rifaximin Precautions
If the symptoms of E. Coli don’t start to improve within 24 hours seek medical attention again. Not all forms of bacterial infections will respond well with the use of Rifaximin so it has to be observed on a case by case basis.
